Air-side Particulate Fouling of Microchannel Heat Exchangers: Experimental Comparison of Air-Side Pressure Drop and Heat Transfer with Plate-Fin Heat Exchanger

چکیده
In this study, the air-side pressure drop and heat transfer performance of plate-fin and microchannel coils were tested under clean and fouled conditions. The heat exchangers were tested with two different types of dust, ASHRAE dust and Arizona Road Test Dust. The ASHRAE dust was found to have a very significant impact on the pressure drop of the microchannel heat exchanger, increasing the air-side pressure drop of the microchannel heat exchanger over 200% for a dust injection of 267g (1612.5 g/m). Fouling of the microchannel heat exchanger with Arizona Road Test Dust was not found to increase the air-side pressure drop of the microchannel heat exchanger but was found to decrease the heat transfer rate by more than 10%. In addition, from studies of the evolution of the air-side pressure drop during the fouling process, it is seen that microchannel coils with louvered fins with fin pitch below 2.0 mm were significantly more prone to fouling than louvered heat exchangers with larger fin pitch. Particulate fouling of the wavy-plate-fin heat exchanger resulted in significantly lower reductions in heat transfer and increase in air-side pressure drop than for the microchannel heat exchanger.

متن کاملA Literature Review On Heat Exchanger Air Side Fouling In Heating, Ventilation And Air-conditioning (HVAC) Applications
This paper provides a review on the fouling mechanism and its effect onto the performance of finned tube heat exchangers in HVAC systems. Fouling tends to degrade the performance of heat exchangers by decreasing the heat transfer coefficient and increasing the air-side pressure drop across the heat exchangers. Air side fouling depends on a number of factors on the air side, including type and c...
متن کاملA Generalized Effectiveness-NTU Based Variable Geometry Microchannel Heat Exchanger Model
Microchannel heat exchangers (MCHXs) are now widely used in the HVAC&R industry. Similar to tube-fin heat exchangers used mainly in the indoor units, the innovative variable geometry microchannel heat exchanger will further reduce its compact size and enhance its performance. Variable geometry refers to a heat exchanger with different tube and fin surfaces within the same core with one or more ...
متن کاملEffect Of Humidity And Inclination Angle On Microchannel Heat Exchanger Performance
The effect of inlet humidity conditions and inclination angle on the air side thermal hydraulic performance of a brazed aluminum heat exchanger has been investigated experimentally. The crossflow heat exchanger had flat tubes and folded fins with fin and louver pitch of 2.1 mm and 1.4 mm, respectively. The glycol temperature was held nearly isothermal at 1C, while humidity of the 12C inlet air ...
متن کاملA numerical investigation of γ-Al2O3-water nanofluids heat transfer and pressure drop in a shell and tube heat exchanger
The effect of γ-Al2O3 nanoparticles on heat transfer rate, baffle spacing and pressure drop in the shell side of small shell and tube heat exchangers was investigated numerically under turbulent regime. γ-Al2O3-water nanofluids and pure water were used in the shell side and the tube side of heat exchangers, respectively. Since the properties of γ-Al2O3-water nanofluids were variable, they were ...
